I have a friend on SYD whose (no)name will remain anonymous. It seems no matter what the topic is, somehow his mind -drifter-s and his comment will include song lyrics. If I were playing Rock-n-Roll Jeopardy at a party, I would want him on my team.

Here's my thought; do you have a favorite tune, it might be because of a guitar riff or maybe it's the lyrics. Do you think you know some of the words, great! Please post some of the words then let us guess if we know the title.

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
Absorbent, and yellow, and porous is he?
If nautical nonsense be something you wish...
Then jump on the deck and flop like a fish!

You got a fast car, I wanna ticket to anywhere, Maybe we can make a deal, Maybe together we can get somewhere, Any place is better, Startin' from zero, got nothin' to lose, Maybe we'll make somethin', Me myself I've got nothin' to prove.

You got a fast car, I got a plan to get us outta here, Been working at a convenience store, Managed to save just a little bit of money We won't have to drive to far, Just 'cross the border and into the city, You and I can both get jobs, And finally see what it means to be livin'.

You see, my old man's got a problem, Lives with the bottle, that's the way it is He says his body's too old for workin', I say his body's too young to look like his, My mama went off and left him, Wanted more from life than he could give, I said somebody's got to take care of him, So I quit school and that's what I did.

You got a fast car, Is it fast enough so we can fly away? We gotta make a decision, Leave tonight or live an' die this way.

CHORUS: So I remember when we were drivin', Drivin' in your car, Speeds so fast I felt like I was drunk, City lights lay out before us, And your arm felt nice wrapped round my shoulder, And I, I had a feelin' that I belonged, And I, I had a feelin' I could be someone, Be someone, be someone.

You got a fast car, We go cruisin' to entertain ourselves, You still ain't got a job, And I work in the market as a checkout girl, I know things will get better, You'll find work and I'll get promoted, And we'll move out of the shelter, Buy a bigger house and live in the suburbs.

CHORUS

You got a fast car, I got a job that pays all our bills, You stay out drinkin' late at the bar, See more of your friends than you do of your kids, I'd always hoped for better, Thought maybe together, you and me'd find it, I got no plans, I ain't goin' nowhere, So take your fast car and keep on drivin'.

CHORUS

You got a fast car, Is it fast so you can fly away? You gotta make a decision, Leave tonight or live and die this way

I've another one here from a great show made into a film in 1958. Won't say what the show is nor the composer/lyricist as that will give it away but its my favourite song from this show by these world-famous musical partners and not only my favourite song from it, it also happens to be my number one favourite musical of ALL time:-

I expect everyone of my crowd to make fun

Of my proud protestations of faith in romance

And they'll say I'm naive as a babe to believe

Any fable I hear from a person in pants.

Fearlessly I'll face them and argue their doubts away

Loudly I'll sing about flowers and spring

Flatly I'll stand on my little flat feet and say

Love is a grand and a beautiful thing

I'm not ashamed to reveal

The world famous feeling I feel .....

That movie has been remastered onto digital and currently being screened again in cinemas.
Also the stage version will be held here at the Festival Theatre later this year.

With words like these how can it not be a hit.

I'm as trite and as gay as a daisy in May,
A clich comin' true!
I'm bromidic and bright
As a moon-happy night
Pourin' light on the dew!.

"South Pacific" of course, I LOVE it, when I first saw that when I was about 10 I decided I was going to marry Mitzi Gaynor - and I'm still waiting. That, of course, before I discovered one or two things about myself! As for Debbie Reynolds, loved her in "Singin' in the Rain", that was before she went all hard and bitter after Elizabeth Taylor nicked her husband. Have you seen Debbie as Liberace's mother in "Behind the Candelabra" with Michael Douglas? She is totally unrecognisable even allowing for the fact she is over 80 now. The make-up people must have worked day and night making her look so different.
By routemaster [Ignore] 11,Jan,14 14:37 other posts
I've had the movie of "South Pacific" on video for years and latterly on DVD. I also have the vinyl LP of the 1958 soundtrack. Of the main characters, Mitzi Gaynor was the only one who actually sang. Rossanno Brazzi was dubbed by Georgio Tozzi and even though Juanita Hall sang the role of Bloody Mary on Broadway in 1949, for some reason her singing voice in the film was dubbed by Muriel Smith who also dubbed for Peggy Wood as the Reverend Mother in the 1965 film version of "The Sound of Music". And talking of which, if you've ever wonder why the recently deceased John Kerr singing as Joe Cable in "South Pacific" sounds remarkably like Christopher Plummer singing as Captain von Trapp in "The Sound of Music", that's because both their singing voices were dubbed by Bill Lee. So there you go, everything you wanted to know about the films of these shows but was afraid to ask!!!!

I don't think the film is being shown in cinemas over here right now but thanks for the info, John, I shall have to keep a look out. I've seen lots of stage productions, both amateur and professional in London's West End, it has some of the greatest and most beautiful songs ever written for one show

I can go back even further than that, one of my great interests is music, so how about this from 1955 by a lovely British female singer who died in 1966 aged only 34?

I put on the light in the middle of the night
And whispered: "dear, let's go."
He grabbed a sock and called the doc,
He told me: "don't be slow".
He got me there with time to spare
And then he sat on pins
'til the doctor shook his hand
And told him: "you've got twins".

Oh my you are great 20 tiny fingers 20 tiny toes.
--------------------------------------- added after 89 minutes

OK my turn.
Does my darling feel what I feel
When he comes near?
My heart beats so joyfully
You'd think that he could hear!.

And this one.
Where the pines are so high
That they kiss the sky above
And when I get that lonesome feelin'
And I'm miles away from home
I hear the voice of the mystic mountains
Callin' me back home.
By routemaster [Ignore] 11,Jan,14 12:33 other posts
But can you name the singer of "Twenty Tiny Fingers"???

As for yours, I can't get the first one but the second is Doris and "The Black Hills of Dakota" from "Calamity Jane", one of her greatest films. Strange that "miles away from home" and "calling me back home" is not actually a rhyme with the last word being "home" in both cases but in Doris's hands it doesn't seem to matter.

The song is Tammy in love Debbie Reynolds .And Alma Cogan.20 tinny fingers These where my childhood songs I loved.

Alma Cogan indeed, she was a fabulous singer, a Londoner like myself, although she was Jewish and I'm not. She will always be associated with the bouncy novelty numbers like "Twenty Tiny Fingers" in the 1950s but by the early 1960s she was maturing into a fully fledged song stylist but sadly it all ended when she died of cancer in 1966 aged only 34. Her 1962 rendition of Noel Coward's greatest song "If Love Were All" is the best version ever, a soaring ballad and I defy anyone not to be moved to tears when they hear it.

The taste of life
I can't describe
It's chocking on my mind
Reaching out I can't believe
Faith it can't decide

On and on I carry on
But underneath my mind
And on and on I tell my self
It's this I can't disguise

Oh can't you see
Holding on to my heart
I bleed the taste of life

The pace, the time,
I can't survive
It's grinding down the view
Breaking out which way to choose
A choice I can't renew

Holding on I carry on
But underneath my mind
And on and on I tell my self
It's this I can't disguise

Oh can't you see
Holding on to my heart
I bleed, no place is safe
Can't you see the taste of life

How about this one from way back in 1959:-

When you left me all alone
At the record hop
Told me you were going out
For a soda pop
You were gone for quite a while
Half an hour or more
You came back and remember when
This is what I saw

"Start the movie."

"I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye. Yes, it was this. One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture. A pale, blue eye with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blo.od ran cold. And so, by degrees, very gradually, I made up my mind to take the life of the old man and thus rid myself of the eye forever."

So I'm headed door to door
With my grandmother's cookie jar
I'm sellin' cookies, 12 for a dollar
I ring the doorbell, nobody wants any
I resort to goin' cheaper - 2 for a penny
Anybody, everybody, they ha.te me
I can tell when they spit and degrade me
There's only one house left, the last on the block
Old Man Willie on the hilltop
I ring the doorbell, the door creeps open
And there it was starin' and scopin'
The man's left eye, red, big, and drippin'
I was trippin'.
"Ahh, seeya!"

I ran home.
I couldn't stop thinking
About his eyeball winking and blinking
And it looked not a damn thing like the other
Ugh!
Shoulda wore a patch on the motherfucker
It hypnotized me, mesmorized me
Traumatized, paralyzed, terrorized me

Creepers, where'd you get that ball
And tell me how it even fits in your skull
I want a big long knife to stick it in.
I wanna lift up the eyelid and kick it in.
He's gotta die.
I want his eye buried in my backyard.
It ain't hard, I'm killin' Old Evil Eye!

Evil eye...Oh-Oh-Eye
(The bitch gon' die! Die-die-die-die-die-die-die)
Evil eye...Oh-Oh

"Now this is the point. You fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing. But you should've seen me. You should have seen how wisely I proceeded with caution with what foresight, with what patience I went to work. I was never kinder to the old man than during the whole week before I killed him."

A day gone pass since I heard about J.O.
Met up in this sleigh, cuz I don't fuckin' play.
Anyway, I gotta do him in.
Got a rusty revolver
Put the silver bullets in.
I'm plannin' on playin' one right to his nugget.
Down my drawers with the bucket.
It's time to go, fuck it.
I stuck it up... to his neck when he came to the door.
I really didn't know what I was in for.
First the cold man stared, no a gaze, no a stare.
Kinda like there was no one there.
How weird, my body froze with the blink of his eye.
Evil eye, sendin' chills up my spine.
What to do? What to do?
I gotta try to break.
I gotta try to make.. my way to the gate.
Wait. I can't move, I'm stuck to the ground.
W-What the fuck was that?
I think I heard a sound,
Turned around, there it was, starin' at my face.
This little old man's eye's a make me a mental case.
That's when I felt the pain deep inside,
Deep inside, now his eye's open wide.

I want a big long knife to stick it in.
I wanna lift up the eyelid and kick it in.
He's gotta die.
I want his eye buried in my backyard.
It ain't hard, I'm killin' Old Evil Eye!

Evil eye...Oh-Oh-Eye
(The bitch gon' die! Die-die-die-die-die-die-die)
Evil eye...Oh-Oh

"That night it ceased. The old man was dead. I placed my hands on the heart and there for many minutes there was no pulsation. He was stone dead. His eye will trouble me no longer. His eye will trouble me no longer."

Evil eye...Oh-Oh-Eye
(The bitch gon' die! Die-die-die-die-die-die-die)
Evil eye...Oh-Oh...

I got up feeling so down
I got off feeling sold out
I've kept the movie rolling
but the story's getting old now
I just looked in the mirror
things aren't looking so good
I'm looking California
and feeling Minnesota
So now you know, who gets mystified
show me the power ****
I'd like to say
that I'm down on my knees today
It gives me the butterflies
gives me away
Till I 'm up on my feet again
I'm feeling outshined
outshined,outshined

At the risk of repeating myself, allow me to repeat myself: Chris Cornell is goddamn badass. (I dare say I had been compared to him in fairer days gone by, though I think I more resemble Dave Grohl actually..) I've honestly found myself listening to Temple of the Dog more than Soundgarden, though -- the latter just hasn't held up as well for me (but of course Badmotorfinger and Superunknown are still great).

This is there best song. Uggh!
Pull, pull
Wuh! (Sung sorta like Michael Jackson)
Come on!
Uggh!
Solo, I'm a soloist on a solo list
All live, never on a floppy disk
Inka, inka, bottle of ink
Paintings of rebellion
Drawn up by the thoughts I think

Yeah!
Come on!
The militant poet in once again, check it

It's set up like a deck of cards
They're sending us to early graves
For all the diamonds
They'll use a pair of clubs to beat the spades
With poetry I paint the pictures that hit
More like the murals that fit
Don't turn away
Get in front of it

Brotha, did ya forget ya name?
Did ya lose it on the wall
Playin' tic-tac-toe?

Yo, check the diagonal
Three brothers gone
Come on
Doesn't that make it three in a row?

Spoken quietly: "Anger is a gift"

Come on!
Uggh!

(Guitar solo)

Drop that!
Uggh!
Come on
Yeah
Uggh

Brotha, did ya forget ya name?
Did ya lose it on the wall
Playin' tic-tac-toe?

Yo, check the diagonal
Three million gone
Come on
'Cause you know they're counting backwards to zero

Environment
The environment exceeding on the level
Of our unconciousness
For example
What does the billboard say?
Come and play!, come and play!
Forget about the movement

Spoken quietly: "Anger is a gift"

Yeeeaaahhhh!
Uggh!
Awww, bring that shit in!
Uggh!
Hey!

Freedom...yea...
Freedom...yea right...
Freedom...yeeeaaahhh!
Freedom!
Yeeeaaahhh!
Freedom!
Yea right!
Freedom!
Yeeeaaahhh!
Freedom!
Yea!
Right!

Well Guy's 2014 will be with us in a few days so here's a little ditty to sing along to .All my best wishes peace and happiness to every one on SYD/SYC/SIO and to the guy's behind the scenes too.

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne ?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !
and surely I’ll buy mine !
And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine ;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine† ;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

CHORUS

And there’s a hand my trusty friend !
And give me a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

Love Peace And Happiness .

Look at the stars,
Look how they shine for you,
And everything you do,
Yeah, they were all yellow.

I came along,
I wrote a song for you,
And all the things you do,
And it was called "Yellow".

So then I took my turn,
Oh what the things have done,
And it was all yellow.

Your skin,
Oh yeah your skin and bones,
Turn into
Something beautiful,
You know,
You know I love you so,
You know I love you so.

I swam across,
I jumped across for you,
Oh what a thing to do.
'Cause you were all yellow,

I drew a line,
I drew a line for you,
Oh what a thing to do,
And it was all yellow.

Your skin,
Oh yeah your skin and bones,
Turn into
Something beautiful,
And you know,
For you I'd bleed myself dry,
For you I'd bleed myself dry.

It's true,
Look how they shine for you,
Look how they shine for you,
Look how they shine for,
Look how they shine for you,
Look how they shine for you,
Look how they shine.

Look at the stars,
Look how they shine for you,
And all the things that you do.

So just like that you're fucking dead and gone
You can only wear a crown of thorns for so long
We built an empire and you took the throne
But you built it from bayonets and sat there alone
So just like that you're fucking dead and gone
You can only wear a crown of thorns for so long
We built an empire and you took the throne
But you built it from bayonets and sat there alone

I hope your queen was worth it
Do you still serve her on your knees?
Because you sat when the world was at your feet
Just slept while we lived the dream

You won't miss the water
Till the river runs dry
You won't miss the sunset
Till it burns out the sky
You won't miss what you have
Till it's finally lost
But you don't miss a bastard
When you're bearing his fucking cross

Blacklist
Nothing but a blacklist
With friends like you
There's no need for enemies
With friends like you
There's no need for anything
Blacklist
You're nothing but a blacklist

Well, truth be told
I'm a little bit gutted
I mean you were always a prick
But we still seemed to love you
We started this together and it should have stuck
But there's no room for a useless, miserable fuck
Well I know I was a cunt in the final days
It just filled me with venom, filled me with rage
To see someone not give a shit
Despite of all of this

I won't see you around, I couldn't give a fuck
I'd rather slit my wrists than keep in touch
You're on my blacklist and there's nothing left to say
We're finished breaking our bones, dragging dead fucking weight
I won't see you around, I couldn't give a fuck
I'd rather slit my wrists than keep in touch

Blacklist
Nothing but a blacklist
With friends like you
There's no need for enemies
With friends like you
There's no need for anything
Blacklist
You're nothing but a blacklist

I won't see you around, I couldn't give a fuck
I'd rather slit my wrists than keep in touch
You're on my blacklist and there's nothing left to say
We're finished breaking our bones, dragging dead fucking weight
I won't see you around, I couldn't give a fuck
I'd rather slit my wrists than keep in touch
Blacklist

Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman.
All the world's waiting for you,
and the power you possess.

In your satin tights,
Fighting for your rights
And the old Red, White and Blue.

Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman.
Now the world is ready for you,
and the wonders you can do.

Make a hawk a dove,
Stop a war with love,
Make a liar tell the truth.

Wonder Woman,
Get us out from under, Wonder Woman.
All our hopes are pinned on you.
And the magic that you do.

Stop a bullet cold,
Make the Axis fall,
Change their minds, and change the world.

Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman.
You're a wonder, Wonder Woman.

Get your motor runnin' Head out on the highway Lookin' for adventure And whatever comes our way Yeah Darlin' go make it happen Take the world in a love embrace Fire all of your guns at once And explode into space

I like smoke and lightning Heavy metal thunder Racin' with the wind And the feelin' that I'm under Yeah Darlin' go make it happen Take the world in a love embrace Fire all of your guns at once And explode into space

Like a true nature's **** We were born, born to be wild We can climb so high I never wanna die
