I have a friend on SYD whose (no)name will remain anonymous. It seems no matter what the topic is, somehow his mind -drifter-s and his comment will include song lyrics. If I were playing Rock-n-Roll Jeopardy at a party, I would want him on my team.

OK, I don't know if this is the right place to ask this question, but here goes.

In Stevie Wonder's legendary song "Sir Duke" the lyrics go:

There's Basie, Miller, Satchmo and the king of all
Sir Duke,
And with a voice like Ella's ringing out there's no
way a band could loose.

Basie is Count Basie, Satchmo (spelling?) is Louis Armstrong, Sir Duke is Duke Ellington and Ella is Ella Fitzgerald. These are easy. But who is Miller? I came up with Glenn Miller, but he's a big band artist and doesn't seem to fit with the others who are jazz artists. I also thought of Mitch Miller, but he seems even more unlikely.

So who is Miller? This has been bothering me for years and I'd be eternally grateful if anyone can supply a good answer.

So how do these 3 music greats come together? Count Basie was a jazz pianist, Louis Armstrong was a jazz trumpeter and Glen Miller was big band. Count Basie and Glen Miller were both bandleaders but to my knowledge, Louis Armstrong was not. Is their only common thread they were artists of "good music"?

I always just presumed it was a tribute to Jazz music with Duke Ellington as the focal point, but after quickly reading up about it Stevie wrote it after Ellington died in 1974, he wanted to write a song acknowledging musicians he felt were important.
He later said, "I knew the title from the beginning but wanted it to be about the musicians who did something for us. So soon they are forgotten. I wanted to show my appreciation."

By the way, are you old enough top remember Stevie's first hit "Fingertips"? He was still a boy and his voice hadn't changed yet. As the song is winding down, the crowd cheers and the master of ceremonies comes on and says "Let's hear it for him, Little Stevie Wonder!" At that point Stevie segues into an unrehearsed encore and one of the back-up musicians can be heard asking "What key? What Key?"

I'm not old enough to remember it but I'm very familiar with it, he is amazing in it. When you consider how old he was at the time and how he conducts everything while still managing to sound super cool especially when he starts to ask the audience to join in. I'm pretty sure also that on that live version Marvin Gaye is playing drums, speaking of which.. there's one or two clips on the web of Stevie playing drums and he's awesome, I'll try and track one of them down and I'll pm you the link.... Well, I AM old enough to remember when that song was a hit, since I'm a bona fide old fart. It was in 1963 and Stevie was a boy of 13 and I was a young man of 21. And of course that, too, is in my collection.

I'm something of a record collector nut (to put it mildly), and I remember years ago I was living in a studio apartment. At some point that had become just too small as the audio system and the record collection had begun to overwhelm the place. It was looking like a shrine to the recording industry.
