the speaker is going to St. Ives, the other man, with the wives and sacks, etc., may be assumed to be going in the opposite direction, however, it is possible that they are all going in the same direction, ie to St. Ives. So probably the answer is one, or none. However if all are headed to St. Ives I got 2760, counting the men: 7 wives each with 7 sacks is 49 sacks. Each sack has one cat plus 7 kittens x 7, or 56 felines per sack, for 49 times 56 or 2744. Add the 7 wives, the other man, and the speaker, or 9 to the 2744 for a sum of 2753, and not to forget the 7 sacks as well for a total of 2760. But still another answer is zero, since you said "kittens, cats, sacks, wives". If only the speaker is going to St. Ives none of those four items are going that way; so 0 then is your answer.
